It pains me to write this post but it’s a matter of life and death for a follower of mine. She is 17-years-old and living in an abusive situation. She has parents that won’t accept her Islamic apostasy, who hit her, who know she cuts herself but don’t care enough to get her help. She can’t leave her house. She needs to get out of this situation and anything could help. If you’re in the Toronto area and able to house her, or connect her to safe, cool people who can, that would be greatly appreciated.

The summaries and reviews caught me up and .. yeah.

That’s what bothers me about mass media and pop culture now , because sloppy tends to be widely broadcast and here’s the thing

When it comes to marginalized folks 

Sloppy and ” easily relatable ” = Body convulsingly bad and troubling.

Unintentional but Real.

Every review wants to assure us that well in real life the Rachel Berry’s of the world get ahead ..

Which is true ?

But in being incredibly damn lazy and forgetful about SHOWING Rachel WORKING towards being a star after season one.

( which would have probably made a much better show to be honest)

It showed the real truth of it.

That yes they get ahead but in many ways not by what THEY DO but what systems of power PREVENT OTHER PEOPLE FROM DOING.

Mister Schue stifles everyone else.

Mercedes is repeatedly taken out of the picture and is never supported in being able to build a repertoire instead of being shoved aside for Rachel ( 10,000 Gladwellian hours would be great but when your practice time is spent glory noting for someone else’s showboating…). MErcedes does it on her own mostly ( lil help form the partner) and the resounding things is … NO ONE GIVES A SHIT. She has no “plan” but she’s the only one who CONSCIUSLY applies to multiple schools as part of it even if she’s undirected. 

( Mike Chang’s girlfriend ultimately got him into college so yeah nope) 

Kurt spends half of high school being bullied, worrying about being bullied, swapping schools and throwing competitions to save his family . Santana as well , even if some of that is partially because she’s an AWFUl person to some clubbers.

When Tina finally loses her top she’s shushed , and has to make a deal for her future based on accepting less in her present. Make no mistake whatever she said to get Rachel a shot is about assuring herself the same shot later , because she’s been told

THAT’S HER AVENUE FOR PERFORMANCE SUCCESS.

They all see her off because they’re TOLD to as part of their membership and yeah Rachel gets the big dream but it’s because everyone else got stifled

unintentionally of course !

But thats what flipped my lid about the Tina thing, 

Because since actual excellence and achievement and elitism weren’t part of Rachels success.

The acceptance and acquiescence of her peers was .

They got brow beaten into dealing with an unfairly stacked deck and we’re supposed to applaud when Rachel pulls the full house. And folks tried to convince viewers this was okay.

And the reviewers are right that’s how so many of them WANT IT to work now. Because if talent and actual CONNECTION TO OTHERS isn’t something class privilege , whiteness, and  hegemony can get you.

Then the ” reality” of subjugation of everybody else based on YOUR proximity to power should work
